レズビアンの説明は複数ありますが、多くの場合、女性ないしは女性寄りの人へ恋愛的に、性的に、またはその両方として惹かれる女性ないしは女性寄りの人という部分は共通しています[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]。「女性のみを好きな女性」と説明されることもありますが[2]、「主に女性を好きな女性」と説明されることもあります[11]。また、女性を好きな女性と説明されることもあれば、[11]女性寄りのノンバイナリーやジェンダークィアの人を明示的に含む説明もあります。[8]もちろん、レズビアンのトランス女性もいます[13][14][2][13]。
さらに、出生時に割り当てられた性別に基づいて、レズビアンコミュニティの一部として受け入れられてきたトランス男性もいます。
